Title: The Research and The Reality: Why Boys Drop Out of Chorus and What Can We Do About It – Highlights from new research will ground this interactive discussion of what teachers can do to: 1) keep boys enrolled in choral singing during adolescence, 2) facilitate the return to choral singing by boys who withdraw, and 3) develop active and successful recruitment/retention strategies for different types of schools and choral situations.

Title: Gregorian Chant: A Foundation for Melodic Shaping – There may be no music in which text and melody are more intimately intertwined than chant. This session will explore some of the magic of this profound but delicate relationship, looking at how textual accents, modal structure, semiologic markings, and the intended function of various chants all come together in a mutually supportive way. The session will also show how the understanding and singing of chant can benefit the singing of other repertoire.

Title: Addressing New Research on the Age-of-Onset Male Voice Change – This roundtable discussion will focus on current research findings on the male voice change and how earlier trends in the age-of-onset of the voice change may impact boys’ choirs. Participants of this session will also discuss effective strategies for successfully guiding emerging adolescent males through the vocal mutation process.

Title: Age Appropriate Vibrato an the Aging Voice - In this session, we will define the problem described by the current scientific evidence and investigate the strategies for teaching singers of all ages a proper approach to choral vibrato. Using a small group of singers from Rhodes College, Memphis ,TN, and an equivalent number of area singers age 55-70, all with choral experience, we will demonstrate useful techniques of warm-up and cool-down, choral tone development, blend and dynamics that will foster healthy and appealing vibrato in voices of various age groups.
